Engraving questions
- How many characters fit inside a wedding ring?
- It depends on the width and the size, not just the width. On a UK size N, a 3mm band takes about 18 characters, a 4mm about 20, a 6mm about 23 and an 8mm about 27. Spaces count. This tool applies the real limit as you type.
- Does engraving cost extra?
- No. Inside engraving is free on every ring we sell, laser cut where the ring is made rather than sent out to a third party, so it does not add to the lead time either.
- Can you engrave the outside of a ring?
- On contemporary metals yes, and it is where laser engraving is at its best because the contrast against black zirconium is very high. On precious metals we would usually talk you out of it, because outside engraving wears with the ring.
- What do people usually engrave?
- A date, two initials, or a short line that means something only to the two of you. The most common regret is trying to fit a whole sentence, which ends up too small to read. Short survives better.
- Can engraving be removed or changed later?
- On gold and platinum it can be polished out and recut. On zirconium and titanium it cannot, because the mark goes into a surface that cannot be polished back without losing the finish. Get it right first, which is what this tool is for.
