Engraving questions
- How many characters fit inside a wedding ring?
- About 18 characters on a 2mm band at UK size N, about 21 at 4mm and about 24 at 6mm, counting spaces and punctuation. Wider bands and larger sizes fit more. Our ring order form takes up to 30 characters, and this preview shows the budget for your exact size and width as you type.
- Does engraving cost extra?
- No. Inside engraving is free on every Trothe ring that offers it: type your wording in the engraving box on the ring page, up to 30 characters, and it is laser cut inside the band at no charge.
- Can you engrave the outside of a ring?
- Yes, on some designs. Our Roman numeral rings carry your date on the outside, set as day, month and year, and the runic band can carry your own words cut in runes. On every other ring the engraving goes inside the band, where the words stay private and protected from wear.
- What could I engrave inside a wedding ring?
- A partner's name, initials, your wedding date, coordinates of where you met, or a few words only the two of you understand. Our wedding ring engraving guide has wording ideas by length, so you can pick one that fits your band.
- Does engraving affect my right to return the ring?
- Yes, and this is worth knowing before you decide rather than after. An engraved ring is clearly personalised, so it falls outside the statutory right to cancel and cannot be returned for a change of mind. That is the standard position across the trade, not a Trothe rule. A plain ring keeps the full return window. A faulty ring or one that is not what you ordered is covered either way, and no engraving changes that.
- Can engraving be removed or changed later?
- Sometimes, depending on the metal and how deep the letters are cut. If you might want to change it, a short message is easiest to work with, and a plain ring can often be engraved later. Send us a photograph of the ring and we will tell you what can be done.
- Which engraving font should I choose?
- Roman for a classic, even look, Script for something softer and more personal, Block for clarity on a narrow band. Below 3mm of band width a simple font reads best, and 3mm is the usual minimum for script, because script capitals and long tails need extra room. - Why can I type beyond the estimated character budget?
- So you can try longer wording and see where it gets crowded. The preview takes up to 60 characters and tells you when you pass the budget for your size and width; the ring order form takes up to 30. Long curved text shrinks to stay visible, so if the letters look small, a shorter message will read better on the ring.
