Coming Flat court, palladium
White, hallmarked, and half the weight of platinum.
Ask to be told the day they open.
Platinum is naturally white, so it never needs the rhodium replating that white gold does, and at 21.4 grams per cubic centimetre it has the weight most people mean when they say a ring feels expensive. It is also, unusually, cheaper than 18ct gold right now: gold's rise over the last year has put an 18ct mount above a platinum one from both of the makers who have quoted us. That is worth knowing before you assume platinum is the expensive choice.
Choose platinum at checkout on any of the stone rings and the same mount is cast in 950 platinum and hallmarked. Plain platinum wedding bands are being priced with two Birmingham makers and are listed below without prices.
About platinum rings
- Is platinum better than white gold?
- It is whiter without plating, heavier, and hypoallergenic. White gold is 18ct or 9ct gold alloyed white and usually rhodium plated, which wears through and needs redoing. Platinum scratches into a soft patina rather than losing metal. Right now it also costs less than 18ct.
- Why is platinum cheaper than 18ct gold?
- Gold has risen faster than platinum for two years. An 18ct mount is three quarters gold by weight and platinum is a denser but currently cheaper metal per gram, so the platinum version of the same ring comes out lower from both makers who have quoted us.
- Can a platinum ring be resized?
- Yes, by any competent jeweller, for as long as you own it.
