Black zirconium
Black wedding rings
Every black ring here is black zirconium. The colour is grown out of the metal in a furnace, not painted or plated on, which is the whole difference between these and most black rings sold online.

Prices include UK delivery and engraving. Weights are estimates for a plain 6mm band at UK size N with a 1.6mm wall (how they are worked out); the solid gold bands carry the maker's own weight on each ring's page. Surface hardness is on the Mohs scale, where a higher number resists fine scratches better.
Heating zirconium above 500°C transforms its surface into black zirconium oxide. That is different from applying black plating over another metal: the maker describes a chemically bonded layer and gives it high scratch resistance. It is still a surface over a lighter zirconium core. A sufficiently deep scratch or impact can pass through the oxide, and a pale streak can instead be softer metal transferred onto it, so have an uncertain mark assessed before using an abrasive cleaner.
The range runs from a plain black band to black cut back to bright metal along the edges, grooved, stepped, hammered, faceted, set with diamonds, or carrying a line of anodised colour or solid gold down the centre. Every one is made in your size and engraved inside at no charge. Do not rely on a future resize: confirm the fit and ask the maker about the exact design first.
About black rings
- Is black zirconium black all the way through?
- No. Zirconium is naturally pale grey. Heating transforms the surface into black zirconium oxide, while the core stays pale. The black is not applied plating, but a sufficiently deep scratch or impact can still reach the metal beneath.
- Will a black zirconium ring scratch?
- The maker describes the black oxide as typically around Mohs 8 and highly scratch resistant, not scratch proof. Remove it for abrasive or high-impact work. A pale streak may be transferred softer metal rather than a cut through the oxide, so ask before polishing it.
- Can a black zirconium ring be resized?
- Sometimes a specialist maker can help: GETi says resizing black zirconium is not completely impossible but can be time consuming. Confirm the exact design with the maker. Measure carefully and choose I do not know yet if unsure; nothing is made until the size is confirmed.
