Every ring we make is meant to be worn every day. Three habits keep it at its
best, and the note for your metal below covers the rest. None of it takes more than a minute.
1Take it offfor the gym, the garden and heavy work, where a hard knock does the damage.
2Clean it gentlywith a soft, lint-free cloth to bring back the shine. The notes below say when warm soapy water helps.
3Give it a homein its box when it is off, in the same place every time, never loose by the sink.
Titanium
Light, strong and easy to live with.
Wash it in warm soapy water, rinse, and dry it with a soft cloth. Titanium does not tarnish, so that is all it ever needs.
Over months of wear a satin finish settles into a soft, even sheen, and a polished finish gathers fine marks. Both are the look of a ring that is worn every day, and neither touches its strength.
Black zirconium
The black is grown from the metal itself, not painted on.
It is a hard ceramic surface, around 8 on the Mohs scale, formed by heating the zirconium. Warm soapy water and a soft cloth are all it needs.
If a pale streak appears after the ring knocks against something metal, it is often a trace of the other metal left on the surface, and a soft cloth usually lifts it away. Keep polishing compounds and abrasive cleaners away from the black.
Anodised colour
The colour is a fine layer grown on the metal, which is why it shifts as your hand turns.
Rinse it in warm water and dry it with a soft cloth. If it ever looks a little dull, that is usually everyday residue, and a rinse brings it back.
Polishing cloths and compounds are made for plain metal, so keep them away from the coloured areas and the colour stays as it is.
Solid gold
Warm, soft and made to age with you.
Wash it in warm soapy water with a soft brush, rinse and dry. Take it off before a chlorinated pool or household cleaning, because chlorine is hard on gold alloys.
Gold is a soft metal, and the fine marks it gathers are part of how a gold ring grows into its owner. A jeweller's polish restores the mirror whenever you want it.
Platinum
Naturally white, all the way through.
There is no plating to wear thin, so it never needs replating to stay white. Warm soapy water and a soft cloth keep it clean.
A scratch on platinum moves the metal rather than removing it, so over the years a polished ring softens to a satin patina. Many people love that look; a jeweller's polish brings back the shine if you prefer it.
Gold and platinum inlays
A line of solid precious metal, set flush into titanium or black zirconium.
Care for it as you would the band around it: warm soapy water, a soft cloth, and dry it afterwards.
The precious line is softer than the metal either side of it, so it shows fine marks a little sooner. That is solid gold or platinum doing what it does, and it is part of the ring's character.
Wood inlay
Stabilised hardwood, sealed so the grain stays settled.
Wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it. The one thing it asks is to be kept out of long soaks, so take it off for the bath, the pool and the washing up.
Diamonds
The hardest natural material there is, at 10 on the Mohs scale.
The stone itself shrugs off everyday wear. What dulls a diamond is the film of soap and skin oil that collects behind it.
Soak the ring for a few minutes in warm soapy water, brush gently behind the stone with a soft toothbrush, then rinse and dry. It will sparkle as it did the day it arrived. The same works for diamonds set flush into a band.

Ring care questions
Can I wear my wedding ring and engagement ring together?
Yes, that is how they are meant to be worn. Take both off together for the gym, the garden and heavy work, and clean them the same way.
Can I wear my ring in the shower?
Metal bands are happy in the shower. Soap film is what dulls a diamond over time, so a diamond ring benefits from a quick clean now and then, and a wood inlay prefers to come off for long soaks.
How often should I clean it?
Whenever it looks less bright than it did. For a diamond ring, a gentle soak and brush every couple of weeks keeps the stone sparkling.
Will everyday marks wear the ring out?
No. Fine marks are on the surface and are part of how a ring that is worn every day looks. They do not weaken the band.
