How wide should a wedding ring be?
Wedding bands run from 2mm to 10mm. 2mm to 3mm is fine and sits beside an engagement ring, 4mm to 5mm is slim but clearly a band, 6mm is the classic starting point, and 8mm and up is broad and definite. Compare every width below, with what it weighs and how many of our bands come in it.

Use the same finger to compare neighbouring widths: 2mm beside 3mm, 4mm beside 5mm, or 6mm beside 8mm. A 2mm difference describes the extra coverage along the finger; it does not tell you how much heavier, deeper or tighter the ring will be. Try a similar inside profile so you are comparing width rather than several changes at once.

Wedding ring widths in numbers
Most wedding bands are made between 2mm and 10mm. Men's bands are most often worn at 5 to 8mm and women's at 2 to 4mm, but those are habits rather than rules, and 6mm is where most people start. The table puts a number on each width: how much of the finger it covers, what a plain band of that width weighs in three metals, and how many rings in our range are made in it.

Width, depth and finger size
A ring's width runs along the finger; its depth is the distance from the inside surface to the outside surface. The inside profile is a separate part of the shape. Ask for all three when comparing rings: the same width does not mean the same feel.
A listing described as a 6mm wedding ring usually means a band 6mm wide, not a US size 6 or a 6mm inside diameter. If you already know your size in another country, use the ring size converter to compare the sizing systems. Converting the label does not account for a change in band width or profile.

Will it sit beside your engagement ring?
Look at the side of the engagement ring as well as the view from above. A straight wedding band needs room below the setting to sit alongside it. A projecting head or gallery can leave a gap even when the two bands have similar widths.
A shaped or contoured band can follow a projecting setting, but its curve still has to match the actual ring. Casting House's design guide illustrates these different arrangements.
Take the engagement ring to the jeweller when trying bands. Ask them to check clearance, contact with the setting and comfort when both rings are worn. A photograph or this width comparison cannot confirm that a pair will sit flush. If they do not fit together, discuss leaving a gap, a suitable contour or wearing them separately.

- What wedding ring width should a man choose?
- 6mm is the classic starting point. Go to 4mm or 5mm for a slimmer band that still reads clearly as a wedding ring, or 8mm and up for something broad and definite. The right width is the one that looks right on your hand, and in titanium even an 8mm band weighs only about 2.9g.
- What width wedding ring should a woman choose?
- 2mm to 3mm if it will sit beside an engagement ring, because a fine band lets the engagement ring lead. 4mm or 5mm for a band worn on its own that still looks slim, and 6mm for a classic, confident band. Width is a matter of taste rather than a rule, and plenty of couples wear the same design in two widths.
- How wide is a 4mm ring compared with 6mm or 8mm?
- A 4mm band covers 4 millimetres along the finger. A 6mm band is 2mm wider, and an 8mm band is twice the width of a 4mm band. Those measurements describe coverage, not finger size, depth or weight. Compare them on the same finger with a similar inside profile; the diagram on this page is not life size.
- What is the average width of a men's wedding ring?
- There is no official average, but men's wedding bands are most often made and worn between 5mm and 8mm, with 6mm the usual starting point. In our own range 106 bands are made at 6mm, and the men's designs run from 4mm to 10mm. A 6mm titanium band at UK size N weighs about 2.2g; the same band in 9ct gold about 5.5g.
- What is the average width of a women's wedding ring?
- Women's bands are most often between 2mm and 4mm, narrow enough to sit beside an engagement ring, though plenty of women choose 5mm or 6mm for a band worn alone. Our women's designs run from 2mm to 4mm in solid gold and wider in titanium and zirconium.
- How wide is a 2mm ring?
- Two millimetres along the finger, a little under a tenth of an inch. It reads as a fine line of metal, which is why 2mm is the classic width to wear beside an engagement ring. In 9ct gold at UK size N it weighs about 1.8g.
- What is a UK size N wedding ring?
- UK size N is US 7 and EU 54, with a 54.3mm inside circumference and a 17.3mm inside diameter. It is the size every weight on this page is worked out for: a 6mm titanium band at size N weighs about 2.2g, a 2mm 9ct gold band about 1.8g. The ring size N page has the half sizes either side.
- Is a 6mm ring the same as ring size 6?
- No. On a wedding band, 6mm normally describes its width along the finger. Ring size describes the opening that fits around the finger: UK sizes use letters and US sizes use numbers. Choose the band width and finger size separately, then have the fit checked at that width.
- Is 4mm too wide for a woman or too narrow for a man?
- Either can wear 4mm. It looks different on different fingers, and a matching pair does not need identical widths. Choose each ring for the wearer's comfort and preferred appearance.
- Does a wider ring feel tighter?
- Yes, often. A wide band covers more of the finger, so it can feel snugger than a narrow ring at the same marked size, and a half size up is a common adjustment for wide bands. Measuring with a gauge close to the width you are buying settles it, and the ring size finder explains how.
- Does band width affect the price?
- On some designs, a little. In gold, a wider band carries more gold; in titanium and zirconium the difference is mostly in the making, and many designs cost the same across their narrower widths. Every ring page shows the price at each width it comes in, so you see the difference before you choose.
- Is ring width the same as thickness?
- Width is the distance across the band along your finger. Thickness, also called depth, is how far the band stands out from the finger. Two 4mm bands can have different depths and inside profiles, so width alone does not describe their fit.
- Will a wedding band sit flush against my engagement ring?
- It depends on the engagement ring's setting. A setting raised above its band leaves room for a straight wedding band to sit tight against it; a low setting that projects past the band holds a straight band slightly apart. Holding the two rings together shows you straight away, and a fine 2mm band is the easiest to pair.
