Ripple, 6mm in 9ct or 18ct gold

From £719

A rippled bark texture running the whole way across the face.

Six millimetres of rippled bark texture, fine grooves running across the width so the band breaks the light into lines instead of holding one highlight. The heaviest ring in the gold range at about 2.9g in 9ct and 4.1g in 18ct, which is weight you feel on the hand rather than a number on a page.

About this ring

Ripple, 6mm in 9ct or 18ct gold, in detail

Six millimetres covered in a rippled bark texture: fine grooves run across the width of the band, uneven and organic, like the surface of a branch once the outer layer has come away. Instead of holding one highlight, the ring breaks light into short lines that shift as the hand turns. It has a carved, natural quality that sets it apart from the cut facets of its neighbours. It looks found rather than polished, and it is the band in the range that carries the most gold.

How it wears

Texture works in a daily ring's favour. On 9ct gold, which marks at Mohs 3.5, the grooves absorb the scratches a plain face would show, and wear only softens the ridges into a gentler bark. At about 2.9g in 9ct and 4.1g in 18ct it has real weight, felt on the hand every time it moves, and that sense of solidity is a large part of what the ring is.

Choosing yours

One width, 6mm, so the carat sets the character. In 18ct this is the heaviest ring in the gold range, warmer and more substantial; 9ct is harder and lighter, and still notable on the finger. It suits a broader hand and someone who likes rings that look natural rather than engineered. Next to a partner's Hammered gold or Wide court it makes a pair of different textures in the same metal, each recognisably part of the same family.

The metal, in brief

37.5% gold against 18ct's 75%, so roughly half the metal cost in a year when bullion set an all time record. It is also the harder alloy of the two, which matters more on a ring worn daily than the carat number does. Fully hallmarked, with resizing options that depend on the finished design, and a British standard that has been sold here for over a century.

Surface hardness Mohs 3.5, density 11.2 g/cm³. As a precious metal it is hallmarked under UK law.

About Ripple, 6mm in 9ct or 18ct gold

Can this ring be resized?
A plain 9ct gold band may suit conventional resizing, but the metal alone does not establish a safe size range. Stones, settings, pattern and condition can restrict an alteration; full eternity is not the only difficult design. GIA warns against stretching platinum bands containing stones. Have the finished ring assessed for the size and direction of change, and confirm the method, finish, cost and timing before work begins.
How long will it take?
About 4 weeks. It is made in your size after you order rather than picked off a shelf, in the one width this design is made in.
What is closest to the Ripple in the range?
Satin granulated, his (9ct gold) and Cross weave (9ct gold). The comparison table on this page sets them side by side on metal, width, hardness and price.
