Precious metal
18ct gold
The traditional choice
75% gold, in yellow, white or rose. Heavier, richer in colour, and the metal most people picture when they picture a wedding ring. Hallmarked at the Birmingham Assay Office, and resizable by a jeweller.
Right for
- Depth of colour
- Weight on the finger
- An heirloom
Choose something else if
- You want a ring that resists scratches
- You want a hallmarked gold ring for less
Honestly
Gold rose about 36% in twelve months and that is in this price. 9ct gets you a hallmarked gold ring for meaningfully less.
Resizing. Yes. A plain 18ct gold band can be made larger or smaller by a jeweller, the way wedding rings have always been resized. The exception is a band set with stones all the way round, where there is nowhere to cut without disturbing a stone, so on those the size is settled when you order. More on which rings can be altered.
Measure with the free size finder and every ring is made to that size. If you are not sure yet, order with "I do not know yet" and we confirm the size with you before anything is made, and an unengraved ring can come back within 14 days.

Guides about 18ct gold
18ct gold questions
- Can a 18ct gold ring be resized?
- Yes. A plain 18ct gold band can be made larger or smaller by a jeweller, the way wedding rings have always been resized. The exception is a band set with stones all the way round, where there is nowhere to cut without disturbing a stone, so on those the size is settled when you order.
- Is 18ct gold hard wearing?
- Its surface sits at Mohs 3. For comparison, airborne dust contains quartz at Mohs 7, which is why anything below that picks up fine scratches from ordinary wear. This is well below it, so expect marks. They polish out.
- Is 18ct gold hallmarked?
- Yes, at the Birmingham Assay Office. Gold over 1g and platinum over 0.5g must legally carry a UK hallmark, and ours do.
- How heavy is a 18ct gold ring?
- 15.6 grams per cubic centimetre. Titanium is the lightest thing we make at 4.5 and platinum the heaviest at 21.4, so this sits at the heavy end of the range.
- Is 18ct gold safe for sensitive skin?
- Not always. Some white gold alloys contain nickel, which is the usual cause of a reaction. If jewellery has irritated your skin before, choose titanium, zirconium, platinum or palladium.
