About this ring

Satin granulated, his: 6mm in 9ct or 18ct gold, in detail

The satin half of the pair: a 6mm gold band brushed all the way round to a soft, even finish. Brushing lays down fine parallel lines that take the mirror off the metal and leave a warm, low lustre, more like brushed silk than polish. There is no pattern and no second colour, so the ring's interest lies in that quiet surface and in how it answers the granulated women's ring beside it. At about 2.6g in 9ct, it is also the heavier of the two, a plain band with real substance.

How it wears

Satin ages well on gold. 9ct sits at Mohs 3.5, so the ring will pick up fine marks in daily wear, but a brushed surface is itself made of fine lines, and new ones blend into the grain instead of interrupting a shine. Over the years the satin may gain a little polish where it rubs most, which reads as wearing in rather than wearing out. The comfort fit inside keeps a 6mm width easy to live with.

Choosing yours

One width, 6mm, and two carats. 9ct is about 2.6g and the harder alloy, a practical choice for a ring that goes everywhere; 18ct is about 3.6g, heavier and higher in gold, for someone who wants weight they can feel. A brushed 6mm band suits someone who likes a substantial ring that never looks showy.

Paired with Satin granulated, hers, the set is matched in width and metal and contrasted in finish: two individual rings that clearly belong together.

The metal, in brief

37.5% gold against 18ct's 75%, so roughly half the metal cost in a year when bullion set an all time record. It is also the harder alloy of the two, which matters more on a ring worn daily than the carat number does. Fully hallmarked, with resizing options that depend on the finished design, and a British standard that has been sold here for over a century.

Surface hardness Mohs 3.5, density 11.2 g/cm³. As a precious metal it is hallmarked under UK law.

About Satin granulated, his: 6mm in 9ct or 18ct gold

Can this ring be resized?
A plain 9ct gold band may suit conventional resizing, but the metal alone does not establish a safe size range. Stones, settings, pattern and condition can restrict an alteration; full eternity is not the only difficult design. GIA warns against stretching platinum bands containing stones. Have the finished ring assessed for the size and direction of change, and confirm the method, finish, cost and timing before work begins.
How long will it take?
About 4 weeks. It is made in your size after you order rather than picked off a shelf, in the one width this design is made in.
What is closest to the Satin granulated, his in the range?
Cross weave (9ct gold) and Ripple (9ct gold). The comparison table on this page sets them side by side on metal, width, hardness and price.
