9ct gold
Precious, at half the metal cost
37.5% gold against 18ct's 75%, so roughly half the metal cost in a year when bullion set an all time record. It is also the harder alloy of the two, which matters more on a ring worn daily than the carat number does. Fully hallmarked, resizable by any jeweller, and a British standard that has been sold here for over a century.

Honestly
All gold is soft. At Mohs 3.5 this will pick up more marks in a year than zirconium will in ten. That is normal and it polishes out.
Resizing. Yes. A plain 9ct gold band can be made larger or smaller by a jeweller, the way wedding rings have always been resized. The exception is a band set with stones all the way round, where there is nowhere to cut without disturbing a stone, so on those the size is settled when you order. 9ct gold questions
- Can a 9ct gold ring be resized?
- Yes. A plain 9ct gold band can be made larger or smaller by a jeweller, the way wedding rings have always been resized. The exception is a band set with stones all the way round, where there is nowhere to cut without disturbing a stone, so on those the size is settled when you order.
- Is 9ct gold hard wearing?
- Its surface sits at Mohs 3.5. For comparison, airborne dust contains quartz at Mohs 7, which is why anything below that picks up fine scratches from ordinary wear. This is well below it, so expect marks. They polish out.
- Is 9ct gold hallmarked?
- Yes, at the Birmingham Assay Office. Gold over 1g and platinum over 0.5g must legally carry a UK hallmark, and ours do.
- How heavy is a 9ct gold ring?
- 11.2 grams per cubic centimetre. Titanium is the lightest thing we make at 4.5 and platinum the heaviest at 21.4, so this sits in the middle of the range.
- Is 9ct gold safe for sensitive skin?
- Not always. Some white gold alloys contain nickel, which is the usual cause of a reaction. If jewellery has irritated your skin before, choose titanium, zirconium, platinum or palladium.
