Soft ridge, 3mm in 9ct or 18ct gold
From £535
The face rises to a gentle ridge, so the light runs along the finger.
Three millimetres, with the face rising to a soft ridge rather than sitting flat. A flat band catches one highlight; a ridged one runs a line of light along the length of the finger, which is what makes a narrow band read as more than a plain circle. About 1.1g in 9ct and 1.6g in 18ct.

About this ring
Soft ridge, 3mm in 9ct or 18ct gold, in detail
Three millimetres of gold whose face rises from each edge to a soft central ridge, like a roof with its peak sanded smooth. That small change of angle is the whole design. A flat face holds one highlight; this one carries a thin line of light along the length of the band, so a narrow ring reads as drawn with a pen rather than plain. Polished all over, it sits between the Slim band and the wider courts, with more presence than the first and less metal than the second.
How it wears
The ridge meets the world first, so that is where fine marks gather, while the slopes on either side stay brighter for longer. On 9ct gold, at Mohs 3.5, those marks are normal and polish out, and the line of light comes back with them. At about 1.1g in 9ct it is light enough to forget, and the rounded peak has no sharp edge to catch on anything.
Choosing yours
One width, 3mm, so the decision is between the two carats. 9ct is the harder alloy and keeps the ridge crisp through daily wear. 18ct, about 1.6g, has the richer colour, and on a ridged face that warmth runs along the line of light. The soft ridge suits someone who finds a flat band too plain but does not want texture or pattern, and its slim width lets it sit close beside an engagement ring without crowding.
The width
| Width | How it reads |
|---|---|
| 3mm | Slim and fine, sits easily beside an engagement ring |

The design and width are the same in each; the gold changes the colour depth, the weight and the hallmark. 9ct or 18ct gold, compared.

The metal, in brief
37.5% gold against 18ct's 75%, so roughly half the metal cost in a year when bullion set an all time record. It is also the harder alloy of the two, which matters more on a ring worn daily than the carat number does. Fully hallmarked, with resizing options that depend on the finished design, and a British standard that has been sold here for over a century.
Surface hardness Mohs 3.5, density 11.2 g/cm³. As a precious metal it is hallmarked under UK law.

About Soft ridge, 3mm in 9ct or 18ct gold
- Can this ring be resized?
- A plain 9ct gold band may suit conventional resizing, but the metal alone does not establish a safe size range. Stones, settings, pattern and condition can restrict an alteration; full eternity is not the only difficult design. GIA warns against stretching platinum bands containing stones. Have the finished ring assessed for the size and direction of change, and confirm the method, finish, cost and timing before work begins.
- How long will it take?
- About 4 weeks. It is made in your size after you order rather than picked off a shelf, in the one width this design is made in.
- What is closest to the Soft ridge in the range?
- Square facet, hers (9ct gold) and Square facet, his (9ct gold). The comparison table on this page sets them side by side on metal, width, hardness and price.
- What if I get the size wrong?
- Return it inside 14 days and we refund it, and we pay the postage. Use the free ring size finder first if you are unsure, and if the ring is a surprise, ask us and we will talk you through the ways to find out without asking them.
