Square facet, his: 4mm in 9ct or 18ct gold

From £535

A row of square facets, cut the same on both rings. 4mm, sold alone or as a set.

Four millimetres with the face cut into a row of square facets, each one catching the light on its own. Comfort fit inside, so the inner edge is rounded rather than left square against the finger. About 1.1g in 9ct and 1.6g in 18ct. It is one half of a set: order it with the matching women's ring and the pair is ten per cent off.

About this ring

Square facet, his: 4mm in 9ct or 18ct gold, in detail

A 4mm gold band whose outer face is cut into a line of square facets running all the way round. Close up it looks almost architectural, a sequence of small flat panels; at arm's length those panels break the light into separate points, so the ring glints rather than gleams. It keeps a modest width and lets the cut do the work, which means it reads as a plain gold band from across a room and only shows its pattern up close. The cut matches the women's ring facet for facet.

How it wears

The faceting helps in daily life. A row of small flat planes scatters reflections in several directions, so the fine scuffs that 9ct gold picks up at Mohs 3.5 are harder to spot than they would be on one smooth, polished curve. Where marks do build up over the years, they polish away. Inside, the comfort fit rounds the edge, so the band slides on easily and stays comfortable when the hand closes around a tool or a steering wheel.

Choosing yours

Only one width is made, 4mm, a modest band for someone who prefers a ring that sits quietly beside a watch or under a cuff. The carat is the decision: 9ct, about 1.1g, is the harder alloy and the practical choice for a ring that goes everywhere, while 18ct, about 1.6g, is the higher gold content for someone who values the metal itself.

Its partner is Square facet, hers, cut the same way at the same width, and the pair can be ordered together as a set.

The metal, in brief

37.5% gold against 18ct's 75%, so roughly half the metal cost in a year when bullion set an all time record. It is also the harder alloy of the two, which matters more on a ring worn daily than the carat number does. Fully hallmarked, with resizing options that depend on the finished design, and a British standard that has been sold here for over a century.

Surface hardness Mohs 3.5, density 11.2 g/cm³. As a precious metal it is hallmarked under UK law.

About Square facet, his: 4mm in 9ct or 18ct gold

Can this ring be resized?
A plain 9ct gold band may suit conventional resizing, but the metal alone does not establish a safe size range. Stones, settings, pattern and condition can restrict an alteration; full eternity is not the only difficult design. GIA warns against stretching platinum bands containing stones. Have the finished ring assessed for the size and direction of change, and confirm the method, finish, cost and timing before work begins.
How long will it take?
About 4 weeks. It is made in your size after you order rather than picked off a shelf, in the one width this design is made in.
What is closest to the Square facet, his in the range?
Soft ridge (9ct gold) and Hammered gold (9ct gold). The comparison table on this page sets them side by side on metal, width, hardness and price.
