About this ring

Contrast texture, hers: 4mm in 9ct or 18ct gold, in detail

Four millimetres in two golds and two finishes: a frosted white centre, cut to a fine sparkle, held between polished yellow rails. The centre glitters in tiny points while the rails carry smooth lines of light, so the band is lively without a stone. Within the set, the Contrast texture, his reverses the emphasis, with a polished white face between yellow edges. Same colours, different surfaces: hers is the one that catches the eye across a room.

How it wears

Comfort fit inside keeps the edges rounded against the finger. The frosted centre hides everyday marks well, while the polished yellow rails show fine scratches first, as polished 9ct gold at Mohs 3.5 always does, and they polish out. The sparkle softens gently over the years where it meets the most contact. 9ct is not hypoallergenic, and the white gold centre is not suited to skin that reacts to nickel. At about 1.3g in 9ct it is light and easy to wear.

Choosing yours

One width, 4mm. 18ct deepens the yellow and sharpens the contrast with the white, at about 1.8g; 9ct is lighter and harder. It suits someone who likes a little sparkle and wears both white and yellow jewellery. With the Contrast texture, his it makes a set that matches in tone but not in texture: hers frosted, his polished. For a standalone band in the same spirit, Sparkle line is its nearest neighbour in the range.

The metal, in brief

37.5% gold against 18ct's 75%, so roughly half the metal cost in a year when bullion set an all time record. It is also the harder alloy of the two, which matters more on a ring worn daily than the carat number does. Fully hallmarked, with resizing options that depend on the finished design, and a British standard that has been sold here for over a century.

Surface hardness Mohs 3.5, density 11.2 g/cm³. As a precious metal it is hallmarked under UK law.

About Contrast texture, hers: 4mm in 9ct or 18ct gold

Can this ring be resized?
A plain 9ct gold band may suit conventional resizing, but the metal alone does not establish a safe size range. Stones, settings, pattern and condition can restrict an alteration; full eternity is not the only difficult design. GIA warns against stretching platinum bands containing stones. Have the finished ring assessed for the size and direction of change, and confirm the method, finish, cost and timing before work begins.
How long will it take?
About 4 weeks. It is made in your size after you order rather than picked off a shelf, in the one width this design is made in.
What is closest to the Contrast texture, hers in the range?
Scrollwork (9ct gold) and Faceted vega, his (9ct gold). The comparison table on this page sets them side by side on metal, width, hardness and price.
