Rounded court, 4mm in 9ct or 18ct gold

From £565

Rounded outside and rounded inside, which is the comfortable one.

Four millimetres in a court section, meaning rounded on the outside and rounded on the inside as well. That inner curve is the whole point: nothing sits square against the finger, which is why the court is the profile most people end up choosing. About 1.4g in 9ct and 2.0g in 18ct, so it is a lighter court than a traditional heavyweight band.

About this ring

Rounded court, 4mm in 9ct or 18ct gold, in detail

A four millimetre court band, curved on the outside and curved again on the inside, so the cross section is a soft lens of gold. The finish is satin: a fine brushed grain that spreads the light into a low, even glow rather than one sharp reflection, so the ring is read by its curve instead of its shine. It is the traditional wedding ring silhouette, given a quieter surface than a polished court would have, which makes it look settled from the first day.

How it wears

Comfort is the reason the court shape exists. The inner curve means no square edge presses into the finger when the hand closes, which matters on a ring that never comes off. The satin finish helps as well: 9ct gold marks at Mohs 3.5, and small scratches sink into the brushed grain rather than standing out. Over the years the high points will slowly gain a soft shine, and the satin can be brushed back whenever it is wanted.

Choosing yours

Four millimetres sits in the middle of the gold widths: wide enough to read as a wedding band, slim enough to suit a narrower finger. At about 1.4g in 9ct and 2.0g in 18ct it is lighter than a heavyweight court, so it never feels bulky. 18ct brings a warmer colour up through the satin; 9ct gives the harder surface. It suits anyone who wants the classic shape without a mirror finish to look after, and it makes an easy match for a partner's Wide court.

The metal, in brief

37.5% gold against 18ct's 75%, so roughly half the metal cost in a year when bullion set an all time record. It is also the harder alloy of the two, which matters more on a ring worn daily than the carat number does. Fully hallmarked, with resizing options that depend on the finished design, and a British standard that has been sold here for over a century.

Surface hardness Mohs 3.5, density 11.2 g/cm³. As a precious metal it is hallmarked under UK law.

About Rounded court, 4mm in 9ct or 18ct gold

Can this ring be resized?
A plain 9ct gold band may suit conventional resizing, but the metal alone does not establish a safe size range. Stones, settings, pattern and condition can restrict an alteration; full eternity is not the only difficult design. GIA warns against stretching platinum bands containing stones. Have the finished ring assessed for the size and direction of change, and confirm the method, finish, cost and timing before work begins.
How long will it take?
About 4 weeks. It is made in your size after you order rather than picked off a shelf, in the one width this design is made in.
What is closest to the Rounded court in the range?
Milgrain edge (9ct gold) and Minimal edge, his (9ct gold). The comparison table on this page sets them side by side on metal, width, hardness and price.
