About this ring

Lab grown diamond solitaire engagement ring, in detail

A single diamond held in four claws above a slim 1.5mm band. The claws hold the stone high and leave most of it open, so light enters from the sides as well as the top and comes back as brightness and fire. Grown in a laboratory rather than mined, the stone is chemically and optically a diamond, graded by the same laboratories on the same scale: G to H colour, VS clarity, excellent cut. Each one is chosen against its IGI or GIA report. The setting is kept deliberately plain, so the stone carries the whole ring.

How it wears

Diamond sits at 10 on the Mohs scale, the top of it, so the stone resists the scratches of an ordinary day. The band and claws are 9ct gold as standard, a harder alloy than 18ct but still a soft metal at Mohs 3.5; it collects fine marks with wear, and those polish out. A raised stone can catch on knitwear, so the gym and the garden are times to take it off. Warm soapy water keeps the diamond bright.

Choosing yours

The ladder starts at half a carat and runs to two. Half a carat is a clear, bright stone on a slim band; from a carat up the diamond becomes the first thing anyone notices about the hand.

The metal sets the mood: yellow or rose gold warms the ring, white gold or platinum keeps it cool. 9ct is standard, with 14ct, 18ct and platinum as options, and a halo or a set band can be added. For a mined stone graded on the same scale, there is the Natural diamond solitaire.

The metal, in brief

37.5% gold against 18ct's 75%, so roughly half the metal cost in a year when bullion set an all time record. It is also the harder alloy of the two, which matters more on a ring worn daily than the carat number does. Fully hallmarked, with resizing options that depend on the finished design, and a British standard that has been sold here for over a century.

Surface hardness Mohs 3.5, density 11.2 g/cm³. As a precious metal it is hallmarked under UK law.

About Lab grown diamond solitaire engagement ring

Can this ring be resized?
A plain 9ct gold band may suit conventional resizing, but the metal alone does not establish a safe size range. Stones, settings, pattern and condition can restrict an alteration; full eternity is not the only difficult design. GIA warns against stretching platinum bands containing stones. Have the finished ring assessed for the size and direction of change, and confirm the method, finish, cost and timing before work begins.
Do I see the stone before it is set?
Yes. Each stone is chosen individually against its laboratory report and we send you that report, with the stone's own grades and any treatment, before anything is set. If you would rather a different stone within the same grade we will find one.
Is engraving included?
Yes, and it is optional. Leave the box blank and the ring is made plain. If you do want one it is laser cut inside the band where the ring is made, rather than sent out to a third party, and there is no charge and no extra wait.
How long will it take?
About 4 weeks. The stone is sourced against its report, the mount is cast in your metal and size, and the ring is set, checked and hallmarked before it is posted insured.
Can I return it if I have it engraved?
Not for a change of mind. An engraving makes the ring clearly personalised, which puts it outside the statutory right to cancel, and it cannot be resold. Every ring shop draws the line here. Order it plain and you keep the full 14 days. Either way, a ring that arrives faulty or is not what you ordered is covered by the Consumer Rights Act, which nothing waives.
What is closest to the Lab grown diamond solitaire in the range?
Natural diamond solitaire (gold or platinum) and Wide court (9ct gold). The comparison table on this page sets them side by side on metal, width, hardness and price.
What if I get the size wrong?
If it is unengraved, return it inside 14 days and we refund it, and we pay the postage. Use the free ring size finder first if you are unsure, and if the ring is a surprise, ask us and we will talk you through the ways to find out without asking them.
