Ogham, titanium

From £269

Ancient Irish script, cut as lines across the band.

Ogham is the early medieval Irish alphabet, written as groups of strokes across a central line, and it takes to a ring better than any Latin letter: the whole band reads as a pattern until you know it says something. Laser cut into satin titanium at depth. A name or a word of your own can be set in it.

About this ring

Ogham, titanium, in detail

Ogham writes in strokes rather than letters: short lines and notches grouped along a central stem. On this band the stem runs around satin titanium and the strokes cross it, laser cut at depth, so the whole surface becomes a rhythm of parallel marks. Until someone knows what it is, it reads simply as pattern, closer to a ribbed band than to lettering. It is the early medieval Irish alphabet, and set in metal it looks less like an inscription than an ornament that happens to be legible.

How it wears

The short, evenly spaced lines of ogham are kind to a titanium surface. The metal is light, at about 4.5 g per cubic centimetre, and can gather fine marks over time; across a band ruled with cut strokes, those marks are broken up by the pattern and hard to pick out. The cuts themselves sit below the surface, out of the way of most contact. Abrasive work is the one thing worth taking it off for, and the strokes keep their crisp edges. Titanium is hypoallergenic.

Choosing yours

Because ogham is built from strokes, it scales gracefully. A 4 or 5mm band gives a fine, close pattern; at 9 or 10mm the strokes are long enough to read as script to anyone who knows it. A name or a word of your own can be set in it, which suits a couple with a connection to Ireland, or anyone who likes the idea of a message hidden in plain sight. The design pairs with itself, so two bands can carry two names, one on each.

Width by width

WidthHow it readsWeight, est.Price
4mm Slim, the quietest everyday width 1.5g £269
5mm Between slim and classic 1.8g £269
6mm Classic, the usual starting point for a band 2.2g £269
7mm Classic to broad, more of the pattern shows 2.5g £269
8mm Broad, a ring that is clearly there 2.9g £295
9mm Wide and bold, best on a larger hand 3.3g £295
10mm Wide and bold, best on a larger hand 3.6g £295

Weights are estimates for a plain band of the same width in titanium at UK size N with a 1.6mm wall, from the model in our ring weight calculator. A pattern cut into the surface removes a little metal, so the finished ring is slightly lighter. The price steps up at the widths that take more metal to make.

The metal, in brief

Titanium is by a distance the lightest metal we make rings in. At about 4.5 g per cubic centimetre it is under a third the reference density of 18ct yellow gold. GETi says it normally uses Grade 2 for its designs and reserves higher-tensile Grade 5 for tension-set rings, so the exact grade belongs in the specification of the ring rather than a range-wide claim.

Surface hardness Mohs 6, density 4.5 g/cm³, and hypoallergenic, so it is a sound choice for skin that reacts to nickel. It is not a precious metal, so it carries no hallmark.

About Ogham, titanium

Can this ring be resized?
Limited enlargement may be possible. GETi says grade 5 titanium cannot be stretched or compressed: machining the inside larger removes metal and cannot reduce the size. Wall thickness, stones and inlays limit that option. Grade 2 titanium has different possibilities, so check the actual grade and design. A remake may be offered instead; confirm what happens to the original ring, engraving and finish before agreeing.
Is engraving included?
Yes, and it is optional. Leave the box blank and the ring is made plain. If you do want one it is laser cut inside the band where the ring is made, rather than sent out to a third party, and there is no charge and no extra wait.
How long will it take?
2 to 3 weeks. It is made in your size after you order, not picked off a shelf, and that is the reason the widths and finishes are open choices.
Can I return it if I have it engraved?
Not for a change of mind. An engraving makes the ring clearly personalised, which puts it outside the statutory right to cancel, and it cannot be resold. Every ring shop draws the line here. Order it plain and you keep the full 30 days. Either way, a ring that arrives faulty or is not what you ordered is covered by the Consumer Rights Act, which nothing waives.
How much does the Ogham, titanium ring weigh?
About 1.5g at 4mm, 2.2g at 6mm, 3.6g at 10mm, estimated for a plain band in titanium at UK size N. Larger sizes and wider bands weigh more. It is a light ring by any standard: 18ct gold of the same size is more than twice the weight.
What widths does it come in, and do they cost the same?
4 to 10mm. 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 7mm are £269, and 8mm, 9mm, 10mm £295, because the wider bands take more metal to make.
What is closest to the Ogham, titanium in the range?
Celtic (titanium) and Runes, titanium (titanium). The comparison table on this page sets them side by side on metal, width, hardness and price.

If it is unengraved, return it inside 30 days and we refund it, and we pay the postage. Use the free ring size finder first if you are unsure, and if the ring is a surprise, ask us and we will talk you through the ways to find out without asking them.
