Titanium
The light one
Titanium is by a distance the lightest metal we make rings in. At about 4.5 g per cubic centimetre it is under a third the reference density of 18ct yellow gold. Our maker says it normally uses Grade 2 for its designs and reserves higher-tensile Grade 5 for tension-set rings, so the exact grade belongs in the specification of the ring rather than a range-wide claim.

Honestly
Titanium picks up fine surface marks with daily wear. Our maker's Grade 5 is stronger than Grade 2 but no more scratch resistant, so the grade is about strength, not about marks. Take it off for abrasive or heavy work.
Our maker’s titanium guidance says its standard designs use Grade 2 and Grade 5 is used where a tension setting needs higher tensile strength. It also says the higher grade does not add scratch resistance. Titanium is hypoallergenic, and the NHS explains that a rash under a ring can come from soap, water and friction as well as from metals such as nickel and cobalt.
Resizing. A little, and only larger. Titanium is not cut and rejoined like gold, but the inside of the band can often be machined to make it slightly bigger. Because it cannot go smaller, the size is settled when you order and the ring is made to that measurement. More on which rings can be altered.

- Can a titanium ring be resized?

- Is titanium hard wearing?
- Yes, for everyday wear. It picks up fine surface marks over time, like any metal, and because it is solid all the way through there is nothing to chip, flake or replate. Most of our maker's rings are Grade 2 titanium, with the stronger Grade 5 kept for tension-set designs.
- Is titanium hallmarked?
- No, and it does not need to be. The Hallmarking Act applies to gold, silver, platinum and palladium. Titanium is not a precious metal, so no hallmark exists for it and none is required.
- How heavy is a titanium ring?
- 4.5 grams per cubic centimetre. Titanium is the lightest thing we make at 4.5 and platinum the heaviest at 21.4, so this sits at the light end of the range.
- Is titanium safe for sensitive skin?
- Yes. Titanium is hypoallergenic and a common choice for sensitive skin. If a ring ever gives you a rash, soap, water and friction trapped under the band are a common cause; stop wearing it, and see your GP if it persists or returns.
