About this ring

Mosaic, hers: 6mm in 9ct or 18ct gold, in detail

Six millimetres of gold laid out like a tiled floor: small blocks, some polished and some textured, alternate all the way round the band. The polished blocks flash and the textured ones hold a softer, matte glow, so the ring flickers between bright and muted as it turns. Six millimetres is a generous width, and the pattern keeps it from feeling heavy, breaking a broad surface into something closer to jewellery than to plain metal. The men's ring carries the same mosaic, block for block.

How it wears

A mixed surface is one of the kindest finishes gold can have. The textured blocks already scatter light, so everyday scuffs barely register there, and on the polished blocks the marks stay small, broken up by the pattern around them. 9ct at Mohs 3.5 will still collect them, and they polish out. At 6mm the comfort fit earns its place: the rounded inner edge keeps a wide ring easy to wear when the fingers bend.

Choosing yours

There is one width, 6mm, so the choice is between 9ct at about 1.8g and 18ct at about 2.6g. The 9ct is the harder alloy and the lighter ring; the 18ct has the greater gold content and more weight in the hand.

A 6mm band suits a longer finger or someone who wants a ring with presence, and the mix of finishes stops it reading as a plain wide band on a slimmer hand. Mosaic, his matches it exactly.

The metal, in brief

37.5% gold against 18ct's 75%, so roughly half the metal cost in a year when bullion set an all time record. It is also the harder alloy of the two, which matters more on a ring worn daily than the carat number does. Fully hallmarked, with resizing options that depend on the finished design, and a British standard that has been sold here for over a century.

Surface hardness Mohs 3.5, density 11.2 g/cm³. As a precious metal it is hallmarked under UK law.

About Mosaic, hers: 6mm in 9ct or 18ct gold

Can this ring be resized?
A plain 9ct gold band may suit conventional resizing, but the metal alone does not establish a safe size range. Stones, settings, pattern and condition can restrict an alteration; full eternity is not the only difficult design. GIA warns against stretching platinum bands containing stones. Have the finished ring assessed for the size and direction of change, and confirm the method, finish, cost and timing before work begins.
How long will it take?
About 4 weeks. It is made in your size after you order rather than picked off a shelf, in the one width this design is made in.
What is closest to the Mosaic, hers in the range?
Linear contrast, hers (9ct gold) and Linear contrast, his (9ct gold). The comparison table on this page sets them side by side on metal, width, hardness and price.
